“Our Discussion” by Nina Nastasia & Jim White. Jim White’s drumming is gorgeous (as is the rest of the song).
“Pop Life” (Prince cover) by Dump
untitled/unfinished thing
“Cinco De Mayo” by Marnie Stern. Ridiculous guitar playing. Ridiculous drumming by Zach Hill of Hella. Her new self-titled album is easily my favorite of hers. Massive.
“In Dreams” by Let’s Wrestle. It’s cute!
I’m not really sure. In the 90’s I saw the band Jawbox perform a billion times and each time was amazing. I think they really spoiled me for rock shows because it takes ALOT to really get me into things when it comes to plain ol’ rock bands.
Yo La Tengo had one of the best shows I have ever seen. The first time I saw them they were to perform at the 9:30 Club in Washington DC. While waiting in line, the power went out and the show was basically cancelled which was a big bummer. Then out of nowhere, the band sets up these boxes for them to sit on and perform an entire set unplugged with acoustic guitars and toy instruments. It was pretty amazing. However seeing them perform properly with electric guitars was amaaaazing. The show was like 3 shows in one.
The Boredoms were also quite amazing. In short, I have no idea what the BEST concert I’ve been to. It depends on the night you ask me. Looking back these are some top choices:
1. Yo La Tengo
2. Jawbox
3. The Wrens
4. LCD Soundsystem
5. !!! (I don’t even like their albums much but live they were KILLER)
6. The Magnetic Fields (their first tour for 69 Love Songs. I’ve never seen an audience so quiet.)
7. Sonic Youth
8. Fugazi
9. Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
10. Elliott Smith
I’m definitely forgetting something here.
My IDEAL concert would be… i have no idea. HORSERIDER
“Forget” - Twin Shadow The gorgeous closer to the gorgeous album of the same title by Twin Shadow. So John Hughes in that perfect way.
Things of “note”:
Yesterday on the road to north Baltimore I was hit by a smell that reminded me of Japan or perhaps my youth which is strange because I did not grow up in Japan.
I have a new neighbor or perhaps an emboldened one who is now blasting loud bass heavy music 24/7 (more accurately 9/7). This is not a happy development.
I think the hipster waiter in Golden West charged me extra for peanut noodles with my meal when they were supposed to come with it.
“Lover’s Start” by How to Dress Well. Ethereal. Sexy.
“Burden of Tomorrow” by The Tallest Man on Earth
“When the World Comes to an End” by Dirty Projectors + Bjork
